Research: what Russians give and where they buy gifts for gender-specific holidays

The delivery service from stores and restaurants, "Kuper," together with the analytical company "OnIn," conducted a survey to find out how Russians will celebrate gender-specific holidays, what gifts they will give each other, and where they find inspiration when choosing a present.

How They Choose a Gift

When selecting gifts, Russians primarily rely on their own taste (74%), but they also often ask about the recipient's wishes (53%). At the same time, nearly one in three (29%), when short on ideas, turns to recommendations in store apps and delivery services. Respondents also frequently seek inspiration on social media and find tips in short videos (20%) or blogger roundups (16%). Meanwhile, 13% usually ask the recipient for a wishlist.

When deciding what exactly to give, the majority focus on the recipient's interests (78%) and lifestyle (58%). Another third (36%) play it safe and choose universal gifts to avoid making a mistake, while 5% ask their family or friends for help.

What They Give and Where They Buy

For gifts to loved ones on February 23 and March 8, Russians most often choose cosmetics and perfume (47%), sweet gifts (38%), and home goods (36%). Also in the top five are hobby-related items (32%) and the most universal option—money (31%). One in four (25%) plans to give jewelry and costume jewelry, and one in five plans to give electronics (22%) or clothing and footwear (21%). Other items on shopping lists include digital goods such as subscriptions and gift certificates (17%), as well as sports equipment or gym memberships (12%).

More than half of the respondents (59%) noted that recently they have begun to more often choose online channels for purchasing gifts. People buy gifts both online and offline, but online platforms and delivery services are still the leaders (82%).
