The Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to revise the rules for parallel imports

The Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to update the rules for parallel imports and link them to the Rospatent registry. Instead of product names, the list will now include Rospatent registry entries that the Ministry, together with the Federal Customs Service, will add to the register.

«We will slightly change the principle for parallel imports: now our order will reference a specific entry in the Rospatent registry. This will ensure transparency of the goods’ origin both at the border and within the country. If there is a registry number, we can clearly see whether the brand is included in the order or not. Currently, it’s just a list of brands,» explained Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Roman Chekushov.

At present, customs cannot allow the parallel import of goods bearing trademarks without alphabetic designations. After the changes, parallel imports will be linked not to a specific trademark, but to the right holder, and will be able to cover all types of trademarks, including graphic elements.
