The profitability of the Russian e-commerce market exceeded 20%
According to Rosstat, in the first half of 2025, the profitability of e-commerce in Russia increased to 21.7%, compared to 6.8% in 2024, while previously the figures were close to zero or even negative. Experts attribute this growth to an increase in the overall volume of online purchases, a shift by major marketplaces towards focusing on profitability rather than turnover, and the exit of large unprofitable players from the market. However, the statistics do not take into account small businesses and individual entrepreneurs, who often operate at a loss.
Overall, e-commerce has become profitable, but rapid profitability is not guaranteed for every market participant, as the business requires significant and ongoing investments in infrastructure, logistics, and customer acquisition. Currently, major efforts are focused on developing warehouse and logistics networks in the regions and small towns to meet the growing demand for online shopping throughout the country.
Ozon noted that, thanks to scaling and logistics optimization, the company achieved positive EBITDA profitability by 2023. Wildberries stated that their business has historically been profitable.
