What Russians bought the most in 2018

Analysts at the financial portal Equity.today compiled a ranking of popular products in Russia for 2018. Experts found that Russians were mainly interested in simple baked goods, children’s toys, and electronics. More details about the study can be found in the article below.

Most Popular Purchases

Last year, Russians showed interest in small household appliances, budget electronics, electrical goods, household chemicals, and personal care products, as well as children’s toys and basic food products (mainly baked goods, ready meals, oils, cereals, grains, vegetables, and tea).

Analysts note that food products continue to hold top positions in sales. Consumers tend to avoid expensive options and look for affordable alternatives, for example, choosing cheese products instead of natural cheese. Another profitable category is bulk gourmet products: nuts, teas, dried fruits, dried seafood, and other small items that are purchased in bulk from China or other Asian countries and then sold in small packages at a markup. Buying a lot cheaply is turned into selling a little expensively.

Green tea also gained particular popularity, driven by customers seeking a healthy lifestyle.

Top-Selling Online Goods

Russians most frequently bought various electronic and electrical goods online, especially compact devices: home and kitchen appliances, mobile gadgets, laptops, e-readers, tablets. Consumers were also interested in perfumes and cosmetics: perfumed water, cologne, skincare and body care products, cleansing serums and exfoliants, and decorative cosmetics.

Analysts also point out a growing interest in gift items and children’s toys. Even in challenging economic conditions, people want to treat their loved ones with presents. Unusual knick-knacks are bought for adults, while toys (plush, plastic, or remote-controlled) are bought for children.

According to the Avito portal, last year users spent almost 34 billion rubles on five categories of products: personal items—6.5 billion; home and garden goods—5.5 billion; leisure and activity products—3.5 billion; household appliances—15.2 billion; and pet products—4.7 billion.
