New Year's shopping has started in Russia with the onset of colder weather

According to the "Megamarket" marketplace, at the end of September, decorations accounted for 47% of sales in the New Year's goods category. Traditional Christmas tree ornaments, garlands, and light curtains made up 55% of the total autumn demand.

Preparations for the New Year in 2025 began two weeks earlier—the shopping season started on September 29. Shoppers actively chose basic decor: window stickers, decorative branches, artificial snow, and Christmas tree beads, which constituted 47% of sales in the New Year's category. By October, interest shifted towards lighting—the share of garlands and light curtains reached 35%, becoming the most significant that month. In November, pyrotechnics came to the forefront, accounting for 20% of the holiday assortment sales structure.

The most in-demand items among Russians remain Christmas tree ornaments, light curtains, and electric garlands—they account for about 55% of sales in the autumn period. Demand for live and artificial Christmas trees remains consistently high.

The most notable changes in the average bill occurred in the "Christmas Trees" category: the figure decreased by more than 2.5 times—from 8,095 rubles in 2024 to 2,890 rubles in 2025. While Christmas trees led in purchase cost last year, the lead has now passed to pyrotechnics. However, experts predict that closer to the holidays, this category may once again take the lead. Conversely, the average bill for pyrotechnics increased by 62%, reaching 5,673 rubles compared to 2,159 rubles a year earlier. At the start of the season, the average bills for lighting also decreased—from 1,283 to 445 rubles, and for decorations—from 866 to 713 rubles. Prices for Christmas tree accessories remained almost at the same level: 589 rubles in 2024 and 551 rubles in 2025.

Interestingly, despite the growing popularity of minimalism in interior design, classic New Year's decorations are not losing their position. Tinsel, "dozhdik" (rain icicles), beads, and string garlands still outpace modern solutions like New Year's projectors and thematic compositions.

According to analysts' data, Moscow accounts for 35% of the total sales volume of New Year's goods, with St. Petersburg taking second place with a 12% share. The top 6 regions also include Krasnodar Krai, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and the Republic of Tatarstan.
