How to start selling online?

If you already have an online store but aren’t sure how to make your first sale, it’s worth giving this some serious thought. You could try intermediary companies or even try your luck and hope for the best...

Or, you can read these life hacks from International Commodity Fair.

Method 1: Help from a Friend

You have hundreds of friends on social media—that’s thousands of potential viewers. Select a dozen of the most active ones and send each of them a message. Ask them to share information about your store on their pages and add a few words of their own. Social media users appreciate a personal touch, so this method almost guarantees your first sale.

Method 2: Social Media Advertising

VKontakte has a whole set of advertising tools: contextual ads, post promotion, and official ads in communities. It’s also fairly easy to negotiate personal terms with closed niche groups. Don’t forget about open interest groups either. Choose suitable ones and place your ad there. The text should be short, and it’s better to adapt it for each group.

Method 3: Newsletter for Subscribers

A newsletter is a great way to convert potential buyers. Gather subscribers, then start sending out emails. Make your newsletter weekly. Share a paragraph of personal updates, showcase a selection of top products, and give a small discount on the first purchase—it's a good motivator.

Method 4: Selling in Comments

In store groups, pay attention not just to posts, but also to comments—you can manually sell items in them. Use tools like YouScan or IQBuzz to monitor mentions of your company on social networks. That way, you won’t miss any comments about your store and can respond quickly. Moreover, you can find mentions of competitors and offer your products or services in those discussions. The key is not to be intrusive or spammy. Crowd marketing can yield excellent results if done right.

Method 5: Contests and Prize Drawings

Contests and giveaways are a good way to promote your store, engage customers, and increase your subscriber count. Choose a prize that will appeal to most (a gift card, limited edition product, or product bundle), and make the rules simple and clear. Announce the contest or giveaway on all your platforms, even if it’s only held on one of them. Be sure to explain how the winner was chosen. If it’s a contest, describe the judging criteria. If it’s a drawing, use a random number generator and record the process on video. This will increase trust in your brand.

These are some simple tips for promotion. Try several at once, and your first sale will come faster. And if you’re an experienced seller, share your experiences and tell us about your first sale at the International Commodity Fair 2020. We look forward to seeing everyone at ICF-2020!
